Advanced Study Opportunities |
| Advanced study opportunities in laboratory safety are available through
the Laboratory Safety Institute. These include independent study, independent
readings, internships and sabbaticals.
Independent Study This program is intended to provide the student with the opportunity for research and individual creativity by allowing the student to pursue a specific project in depth. Students who wish to do a lab safety research project should discuss the proposed project with the Center Director. It may be possible to receive academic credit. Independent Readings Courses Students who wish to do reading in a special topic not covered by any course or wished to deal in depth with a specific topic may, under guidance of the Center of the Center Director, elect independent readings. Evaluation procedures for a readings course will be determined by the Director. It may be possible to receive academic credit. Internships Students wishing to gain additional experience in laboratory safety and laboratory safety training may wish to apply for an internship at the Laboratory Safety Institute. Interns are given responsibility for a specific center project and are assisted by the Center staff. Center interns can work both directly at the Center or in their home community (if appropriate to the nature of the project). Internships are offered both with or without advanced academic credit. Salary for interns depends on the availability of funds. Sabbaticals Science faculty on sabbatical can conduct their leave at and/or with the Laboratory Safety Institute. As with internships, independent study, and independent readings an appropriate project or area of study is designated and pursued. Sabbatical funding will normally come from the science teacher`s institution.
