Laboratory Waste Management

Most serious laboratory accidents occur when "just cleaning up." Small mistakes in disposal have also resulted in environmental damage and hefty financial consequences — even years afterward. To address this often-overlooked piece of the safety puzzle, the Laboratory Safety Institute developed a one-day professional development course specifically focused on the proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste.

The certificate covers the EPA, RCRA, and DOT regulations for labeling, segregation, storage and transportation, along with waste disposal "tricks of the trade": working with waste service vendors, and other legal disposal options that may be available. Proper management of hazardous waste does not need to be an all-consuming task, but it does take discipline, vigilance and common sense.
