National Association of Chemical Hygiene Officers

The National Association of Chemical Hygiene Officers (NACHO) was conceived by Dr. Kaufman, and founded in January 1998.  It is a "virtual community," so to speak, in that the intercourse of the members takes place largely via electronic communications, most of them effected by the listserver labsafety-L@siu.edu.  NACHO might be the first professional association which was actually "born" on the internet.
By subscribing to the LABSAFETY-L listserved bulletin board, you will have joined NACHO.  To join a listserved bulletin board, also called an "internet discussion group," or "email BB," you send a command to the listserver (see "How to join" below).  After your name has been added to the list, any messages you send to the list will be distributed to all the addresses on the list, and you will receive the messages sent by other list members.  Join LABSAFETY-L and become a member of NACHO; it's free and a fantastic way to meet and learn from a large number of lab safety professionals.

To join NACHO, or to change your "real name" send email looking something like this below.  (This is from Eudora Pro 3.0 email with Windows 95.)  More info on commands to the listserver can be found at listref.htm

If you change email addresses you should send email from the old address to the listserv with a SIGNOFF LABSAFETY-L command, and from your new email address send a new SUB LABSAFETY-L command.

To stop the NACHO messages temporarily, for example when you go on vacation and have an Auto-Reply set up:  send email similar to this (this is what Pegasus Mail 2.5 for Windows looks like through my WinFrame connection):

(to turn the messages back on, change the command to MAIL instead of NOMAIL.

To leave NACHO entirely send email looking something like this below.  (This is from Eudora Pro 3.0 again.)  See more listserver commands at listref.htm

To receive the NACHO messages as a daily digest (rather than one at a time you get a single message containing all of the) - send email looking like what you see below.  (This is from Netscape 4.04)  More listserver commands are at listref.htm
