• Preventing musculo-skeletal injuries
• Preventing back injury (including interactive “injury prevention olympics” exercise using expert judges in an open forum setting)
The session creates a learning environment where the learner will understand what creates high risk of ‘ergonomic injury’ and what can be done to prevent or minimize the risk. It will provide the learner with many tools and perspectives toward understanding what it takes to reduce their chance of injury, and a lively forum to create and test solutions for these risks. The learner will explore their personal experiences at home and at work, with regard to specific tasks they undertake. The final activity includes a facilitated exchange where learners read and “review” each others’ personal observations and targeted solutions and a “best of” is determined for the session by peers. These are collectively used for discussion to ensure that the ways to reduce risk are not “hypothetical” but are actual workable solutions. The “best of the best” receive small rewards for their efforts!
Part 2 Techniques to Avoid Back Injury-Materials Handling and Your Back!
The session creates a learning environment to explore the detailed aspects of materials handling that put backs and other body parts at risk of injury. It provides the learner with very specific techniques for materials handling, and opportunities to model/demonstrate, and critically observe these techniques in practice. The session provides core concepts regarding other risk factors for tasks and lifting, addressing an overall review of the task and the environment that it occurs within. The session is capped with a “Back Injury Prevention Olympics” setting, using “expert judges” in an open forum setting with actual “performances” of the lifting techniques. It provides a fully interactive and fun engagement experience, based in critical thinking for technique and understanding of the rationale related to the risks of each unique materials handling task. Top scorers are awarded top prizes!
