- Understand the purpose and structure of NFPA 45
- Define key terms and concepts related to fire risk in laboratory environments
- Introduce laboratory unit classification (Chapter 4) and its implications
- Review code language from Chapters 1–6 including fire protection systems and lab construction
Session 2: Systems, Hazards, and Practical Oversight – Chapters 7–12 + Application
- Explore key technical areas including:
- Chapter 7: Ventilation and hood systems
- Chapter 8: Chemical handling and waste
- Chapter 9: Flammable/combustible liquids
- Chapter 10: Compressed gases
- Chapter 11: Lab operations and apparatus
- Chapter 12: Instructional laboratories
- Emphasize reviewer responsibilities and risk recognition
- Highlight common gaps in oversight and key questions to ask during project review
Objectives
- Provide foundational understanding of NFPA 45 tailored to NIH reviewers and managers.
- Clarify laboratory unit classifications and the rationale behind fire protection requirements.
- Strengthen participants’ ability to review, interpret, and support compliance with NFPA 45 and related standards.
