  • Understand the purpose and structure of NFPA 45
  • Define key terms and concepts related to fire risk in laboratory environments
  • Introduce laboratory unit classification (Chapter 4) and its implications
  • Review code language from Chapters 1–6 including fire protection systems and lab construction

Session 2: Systems, Hazards, and Practical Oversight – Chapters 7–12 + Application

  • Explore key technical areas including:
    • Chapter 7: Ventilation and hood systems
    • Chapter 8: Chemical handling and waste
    • Chapter 9: Flammable/combustible liquids
    • Chapter 10: Compressed gases
    • Chapter 11: Lab operations and apparatus
    • Chapter 12: Instructional laboratories
  • Emphasize reviewer responsibilities and risk recognition
  • Highlight common gaps in oversight and key questions to ask during project review

Objectives

  • Provide foundational understanding of NFPA 45 tailored to NIH reviewers and managers.
  • Clarify laboratory unit classifications and the rationale behind fire protection requirements.
  • Strengthen participants’ ability to review, interpret, and support compliance with NFPA 45 and related standards.
  • Training Format: Live virtual delivery over two days (3 hours per session, 6 hours total)
