The Laboratory Safety Institute Staff

The Laboratory Safety Institute is a nonprofit educational institution providing safety courses and consulting for chemical laboratories worldwide.

Over the past 40 years, we have taught courses to more than 100,000 people in 30 countries, spanning 130 different industries, including research, high-tech, government, medicine, and academia. Our courses open eyes with real-life stories that teach unforgettable safety lessons. We help schools and corporations to improve their safety policies and programs, reducing injuries (and resulting lawsuits) and helping businesses be OSHA compliant.

Virtually any lab, anywhere can benefit from our safety courses. which are regularly held in select cities throughout the U.S. and Canada. We also offer live webinars, online courses, and instructional DVDs.

Jessie Jones grew up in Natick and has been an office assistant in several types of industry. She has worked in real estate, in sales and finance, for Monster.com, and most recently for the Massachusetts State Police crime lab. She's a great pair of helping hands in the field of laboratory safety.

 
Jim Kaufman, Ph.D.

Jim Kaufman, Ph.D.

Founder, President Emeritus

Dr. Kaufman founded the Laboratory Safety Institute after retiring from his position as Professor of Chemistry at Curry College near Boston Massachusetts. Prior to Curry, he was a research chemist at Dow Chemical, where he became increasingly involved in lab safety activities and authored Laboratory Safety Guidelines, which has become the world's most widely distributed lab safety publication.  Dr. Kaufman is regarded as the nation's foremost authority on safety instruction in academia.  He is the author-narrator of the ACS Audio Course on Laboratory Safety and Editor of Waste Disposal in Academic Institutions, Lewis Publishers, as well as the "One-Day Lab Safety Audio Seminar" and "Two-Day Lab Video Short Course."

Additionally, Dr. Kaufman is chair with ICASE, Committee on Safety in Science Education International Council for Associations of Science Education.

Connor has worked in advertising and PR for 13 years at LaVoie Health Science and the American Lung Association. He has a degree in Advertising from the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Colorado. He enjoys the variety of assignments involved in working in a nonprofit environment and implementing creative strategies to engage science professionals in lab safety.

Stephen Taylor has a doctorate degree in chemistry, along with decades of experience in teaching and research at Purdue University and The Shepherd Chemical Company. His mission-driven passion and diverse scientific background mixed with business acumen are a welcome addition to LSI. Before taking the helm at LSI, he was the business brain behind Narratize and Untold Content, two successful startups focused on innovation storytelling and generative AI.
